Does my own automobile insurance cover me for accidents when I am on my bicycle?
In the State of Florida your own automobile insurance will cover you if you're involved in a accident on your bicycle as long as the accident involves another motor vehicle. In Florida we have what's called PIP or no-fault insurance which will cover up to $10,000 of your medical treatment or lost wages if you're involved in an accident involving a motor vehicle in any way, shape or form. In addition, if you don't have PIP or no-fault insurance of your own and you don't own a vehicle, you'll actually qualify to use the PIP or no-fault insurance of the other driver that was involved in the accident.
In addition if you have uninsured motorist coverage, that will be covered as well as a potential claim against the other driver's BI or bodily injury insurance coverage so there are many types of insurance. It's a little bit of a complicated insurance scenario when it comes to bicyclists but it's something that can be unwound and we can figure out exactly how much coverage you have.
